Black Listed: Champs Sports Bar

April 7, 2007

The other night, I went to one of the biggest sports bar in town to watch a hockey game, the Canadiens are in a close battle to make the playoffs. The place was packed because of the circumstances and everybody was there to watch the game, drink and have a bite. I am not usually found in these kind of places but the prospect of watching the game with friends and a bunch of enthusiastic people was not as bad as it might sounds. I cared little about the game but more about the setting and the people I was with.

In any case, we arrived, got seated and called for a pitcher and some nachos. Beer comes in, the nachos come in. Everything is up to the standard I was expecting, not high but decent. Comes the end of the first period, I try to catch the waitress’ attention. Difficult task as she was obviously in the weeds, the place was definitely understaffed and the poor girl was running around like crazy. It took about 15 minutes to finally get her attention and we are able to order food, two subs and a chicken burger.

Second period finishes. Third period starts. No sign of the food, its been more than an hour now and we are starving, she is still in the weeds so I try to get her attention again to see what’s going on. I am finally able to talk to her and she is saying that the kitchen is overloaded and everybody is the same, it shouldn’t be too long. Fifteen minute passes and still no food, I mean its been nearly an hour and a half, I discuss with my buddies and decide to cancel the order and go elsewhere, f*** this s***. I call for her again, and tell her to cancel the order and to bring the bill.

The plates suddenly, magically appear about a minute later. We are famished and decide to take them anyway, might as well, they are ready after all. I start to dig in. The fries are borderline cold, all soggy and the first bites of the sub finds it cold to the core. My tablemates have similar problems and the chicken burger looks like it was taken out of the sole of a shoe. This is unacceptable, I call for the girl and ask to see the manager. I explain the situation, fairly succinctly and diplomatically (no screaming or anything). Now this dude is a big guy, he looks like a bouncer (probably is one), and basically tells me, to my face, that it can’t possibly be cold because they just made it, clearly trying to intimidate me. This dude is saying that I am a liar! When he sees that the intimidation will not work he tells me that he’d replace it, I politely decline and demand my money back, which he agrees to as long as I have not eaten too much of it (can you believe this guy? I mean what difference does it make? It is going to be thrown in the garbage anyway, or maybe not considering the events.) I bring him my plate and examines it (I had in fact taken two bites of the said sub), and tells the waitress not to charge me.

My tablemates, way too nice, and famished, decide not to complain, and decide to pay for that crap anyway. After we ask for our bill, the waitress stops at our table and starts to explain that we should have come early and order early when there is a big game like that. She tells us that things like that always happen when the night is busy. What kind of pathetic excuse is that? Any service establishment is there to answer the call, and provide the service. That it takes longer to get your meal is fine, although an hour and a half is stretching it, but bringing cold food, food that has been under the heating light for the past half hour, is unacceptable. I know they were in the weeds. I know it was a difficult night. I understand all that, but you still have to crank out the meals that are in an acceptable state. The management of that place is clearly not seeing that they have a problem and are clearly happy with customers not ever setting foot again in their establishment. Customers talking about it online for the world to see.

Now on the black list is:

Bar Champs
3956 St-Laurent
Montréal, QC,  H2W 1Y3
(514) 987-6444

  1. Major hockey games do not occur spontaneously and should not catch sports bars under-staffed and ill-prepared.
These people should be wringing their hands in anticipation of such a major business night and be ready to rock, they could have made thousands of dollars more and ensure clientele will return on quieter nights.
They lost you and maybe others who will find a better prepared place to watch the game.

  2. I have been to Champs many times and it is recommended that you and your party arrive 1 hour before game time becuase of the reservations, try going to another bar/restaurant same game anf compare the difference before making such as false accusation about the place. Champs is the best place to watch sports, if the canadians or the alouettes are playing an important game, the place will be packed and service will be slow if you arrive at game time. The staff are great and the ambiance is second to none.

  3. Those are not false accusations, I am merely re-telling the story that happened that night. Whether or not your experiences at Champs were good or not does not diminish the fact that I had a lousy time, was served cold food and was treated like a liar by the manager. Accusations, those are not, they are facts. If Champs is not able to provide its seated patrons enough regards to provide them acceptable service, then they should simply not have as many tables as they do and keep the service prompt. They should plan for that shit, and they didn’t and they knew days in advance that this game was coming, plain and simple.

  4. I stopped going to Champs years ago when they charged me $20 to watch a PPV fight that they were pirating the signal. Apparently this is the norm there, anything like soccer or boxing that you might not get at home they’ll try and soak customers for. This place was an “investment” of scalpers so you know what kind of mentality to expect. Always found service to be slow and uneven…plenty of other places that don’t try to gouge its customers

  5. I agree 100%, Champs Sports Bar is the WORST place to watch a sporting event. I went a few times to watch soccer games and the manager scams people by charging them for games that are on free channels or he is illegally getting the feed from.
The manager is also a punk-a** little b**ch who thinks he is a gangster and gives people attitude, who are actually trying to get in his ghetto bar to make him money.
Bad service, bad price, bad management, simply brutal.
Not surprised this is a scalpers “investment”, same mentality…

  6. There is only one sports bar in this town and that is Champs.

The beauty of it all is that Champs offers an incredible variety of sports no matter what sport you enjoy to watch and no matter where in the world the event takes place and the relative time of day here, your best chance to watch the event is Champs bar.
Their video system is complex and truly amazing, the head end is similar to a cable company. they have over 25 satellite dishes all sizes on the roof. I was fortunate enough to get a tour of their equipment room because my friend knows one of the owners. Wow!

I love it there, especially when there are two or more sporting events at the same hour, I can watch one on the large screen in high definition and the other on their smaller display parked right next to the large screen, Wow! Sports-Heaven.

Champs is a sports bar! if you’re going to nag about how slow the service is on a wild night when the canadians are playing then I suggest you go to a quiet candle lit restaurant. Champs bar is for sports fans.
To cheap to pay for an event then skip the boys night out and stay home and buy the fighting event and see how much more you will pay and yes all PPV events are policed and no sports bar dare show any event unless it is purchased. I know because that is what I do.

P.S. The girls that work at Champs are real cute.

  7. I have been to CHAMPS Sports Bar on several occaisons and the set up is second to none. All the HD televions are setup in a way where you have the best seat in the house, you can watch 16 different games at the same time, I love watching the National Football leage, you can watch all the 1:00pm games at the same time, you can’t do that at any other sportsbar. If there is a big game, you must arrive 1 hour before the game starts and there is no cover charge for PPV events

  8. I http://watchtvonline1.com – watch tv onlinealot, lol some of my favorites are youtube. What are places
    can I watch tv online.

Is it legal for me to have explained here?, and bank accounts? How to start? Can I move my existing business offshore

  9. Cable companies are already offering bundled internet and cable tv services at a cheap price ”

  10. ,~; I am really thankful to this topic because it really gives great information *“

  11. Ahhh.. it’s fine. Same bullshit anywhere you go. You want good food at a sports bar??

  12. My spouse and I stumbled over here coming from
a different page and thought I may as well check things out.
I like what I see so i am just following you. Look forward to checking
out your web page for a second time.

  13. By far …the best sports bar in the city. It really is SAD that people have nothing else to do in life but MOCK sports bars.Champs has been around for 27 years and they know how to run a bar.THERE ORGANIZED PERIOD.Must i say more….PEOPLE If you like sports try to be organized and plan your outing.Dont expect VIP service when times are busy,I Personally used to own a bar in the city for 7 years and it was a great experience…..but i get sick to my stomach when i hear FALSE comments.Honestly if you people like to watch sports in a sports bar…..CHAMPS IS THE PLACE
